Awa Shijira-ori is created by applying a different weaving tension to the warp and the weft. This technique brings out an uneven appearance (known as shibo) in the surface of the cloth. This shibo surface gives the material a pleasant texture that is also light and comfortable to wear. Awa Shijira is then dyed with indigo dye from the Awa Indigo plant. In 1977, the Tokushima Prefectural Government officially designated the making of Indigo-dyed Awa Shijira as a traditional craft.
